“I was about to move out of my apartment because I was so broke. I’d sort of made a pact with myself that I wouldn’t take a job unless it was interesting to me, and I became broke very fast. When I found out I had the meeting with you [Martin Scorsese] I realized that I needed something to wear, so I called Armani and begged them to lend me a suit that I would give back to them right afterward. I felt like it was very important for me to be in a suit when I met you. So I put on this really nice suit and got on the subway to go meet you. I had this feeling of, Okay, I look presentable. But I was very nervous. And then when I walked into the Waldorf and was waiting to meet you down in the lobby, maybe five people asked me where the bathroom was because they thought I worked there.

Bohemea’s Year In Review 2010 - Day 21

Michael Pitt

Where do I begin? Michael Pitt has been a lovely little vision in my life since I first saw him in Hedwig. Sweet fey Tommy Gnosis with the most tremendously pretty lips! Michael stayed on the edge of my radar over the years: being naughty in The Dreamers, working with Gus Van Sant in Last Days (I have a theory that most spectacularly talented young men work with Van Sant) & apparently delivering a memorable performance in Murder By the Numbers. It wasn’t until Funny Games though that Pitt reminded me of our love affair. He was splendid! Truly terrifying, an inspired villain. I so enjoyed backing away from my TV, mouth agape in anticipatory horror as he tortured that poor little family. He also broke the fourth wall fantastically. What a great movie!

So Michael’s pretty lips have both enchanted & frightened me, but this year, they completely overwhelmed me. Enter Jimmy Darmody - the beauty of the Boardwalk! Michael’s gangster is my favourite sort - collected, calm & fantastically cruel. His sweetness, his intuitiveness & his intelligence cuts his cool murderous rage & causes you to desperately want him inside you. Michael commands his scenes, works beautifully with all of his co-stars, particularly Steve Buscemi & Jack Huston. In fact, Jack & Michael’s scenes are probably my favourite of the season. I love watching Jimmy thoughtfully take in his surroundings, mull his situation over in his head & look breathtaking while doing so.

Plus - Michael Pitt, and Jimmy through Michael is the most gorgeous smoker in the entire world. Better even than Joaquin Phoenix, who used to be my favourite smoker. The cigarette is an extension of his hands, always reminding you that they will enact revenge, they will command, they will powerfully take what he needs to survive. And when the smoke is brought to those full red lips? Swoon! I literally swoon! I enjoy watching Jimmy fuss with his smoke, snap it out of his fingers, making the cherry bounce off a wall like a tiny scarlet firework. I like watching him lick his lips, pluck a piece of escaped tobacco from his tongue & oh how he exhales! A cloud of wispy smoke constantly encircles him like he’s some sort of vision that appeared. He is a vision, that one. I adore him.
